From 15–25 August 2025, Thomas Argyarich Jefferson S.Si, a master’s student of the Department of Biology, Universitas Padjadjaran, joined a research attachment program at the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, Cornell University, United States, under the supervision of Dr. Febri Doni (Universitas Padjadjaran and Cornell University).

This program was held in conjunction with the SRI (System of Rice Intensification) Network Capacity-Building and Research Workshops, as well as the concluding meeting of the Polson Grant Project. The visit was fully supported by the Polson Institute for Global Development, Cornell University.
The SRI symposium, which took place on 18–21 August 2025 in Ithaca, New York, brought together researchers, practitioners, and academics from various countries including Chile, Malaysia, the Philippines, Vietnam, Iraq, and more. Professors from Cornell University also attended, creating a dynamic space for global dialogue on sustainable rice cultivation.

During the symposium, Thomas presented on the SRI Global Research Network and the Indonesian SRI Research and Innovation Network, introducing collaborative initiatives and recent developments from Indonesia. This session highlighted Indonesia’s role in advancing sustainable agricultural research within the global community.
The symposium discussions revolved around the current state of SRI research worldwide, the establishment of regional hubs, and strategies to ensure the future sustainability and impact of SRI practices. SRI itself is a set of innovative agricultural practices that aim to increase rice productivity while reducing water use and environmental impacts—an approach that is increasingly relevant in the face of global climate change and food security challenges.
Thomas’s participation not only contributed to the international conversation on sustainable agriculture but also served as an important milestone in strengthening academic collaborations between Universitas Padjadjaran and Cornell University. His involvement exemplifies the Department of Biology’s commitment to global engagement, research innovation, and capacity-building for young scientists.
