Umumnya, produk insektisida yang dijual dipasaran berbahan dasar  zat kimia dan bekerja membunuh hama secara langsung. Hal tersebut dapat mengakibatkan hama lambat laun menjadi resisten terhadap pemberian insektisida dan sulit untuk dikendalikan. Selain itu, insektisida kimia yang berlebihan menjadi residu dan mencemari lingkungan. Oleh karena itu, penelitian mengenai bahan alam\/tumbuhan yang memiliki metabolit sekunder berupa aktividas antifidan dikembangkan sebagai solusi.
