It is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of Professor Dr. Jyoti Prakash Tamang on April 29, 2025, in Siliguri, West Bengal, India. A globally renowned microbiologist and respected academic, Prof. Tamang was a valued member of the Advisory Board of the Master’s Program in Biology at Universitas Padjadjaran.
Professor Tamang was best known for his pioneering research in the field of food microbiology, especially in the study of traditional fermented foods of the Himalayan region and Southeast Asia. His work combined deep ethnographic insight with cutting-edge microbial techniques, contributing significantly to our understanding of probiotics, food safety, and the cultural heritage of fermentation.
In addition to his role at UNPAD, Professor Tamang was a Senior Professor and former Dean at the School of Life Sciences, Sikkim University, India. His academic influence extended globally, with notable collaborations, keynote lectures, and numerous publications that shaped the field of microbiology.
At Biology UNPAD, we remember Prof. Tamang not only as a brilliant scientist but also as a generous mentor and friend. His presence at our academic events and his guidance to our postgraduate programs left a lasting impact on our students and faculty alike.
We extend our deepest condolences to his family, colleagues, and the international scientific community. His legacy will continue to inspire generations of researchers in microbiology and beyond.
